[Illuminated address presented] To Thos. Higinbotham, Esqr. C.E., Engineer in Chief, Victorian Railways, by the officers and servants of the Department of Railways and Roads, Melbourne. 1874 Feb.

Presented on the occasion of Higinbotham's temporary departure for travel abroad and expressing appreciation for his fourteen years' service. Decorated with a border of scenes of railway bridges and viaducts enclosed within a Gothic architectural frame. Signed by the illuminator, J. Trevor Jones.

Thomas Higinbotham was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1819 and gained his early experience as a railways engineer in England. He emigrated to Victoria in 1857 and was appointed engineer-in-chief of the Victorian Railways in 1860. In 1874-1875 he was sent to investigate and report on the latest developments in railway construction and management in Europe, America and India. He died in Sept. 1880.
